<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">
As Thanksgiving approaches each year, vegetarian and vegans tend to be accused of "breaking tradition" for not eating turkeys. And yet, if we hold historical accuracy as the standard for being true to "tradition," then all of us who eat mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, sweet cranberry sauce, and flour biscuits are breaking tradition since none of these things were eaten at "The First Thanksgiving" in 1621. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">
<br />
The strong response people have to vegans not eating turkeys on Thanksgiving belies the unfortunate fact that we place more emphasis on tradition than on our values of health and compassion. And yet, they need not be mutually exclusive. We can most certainly eat in such a way that reflects our values and honors tradition at the same time.<br />

Who, I ask you, can take, dare take on himself the rights, the duties, the responsibilities of another human soul? ~Stanton</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
The point I wish plainly to bring before you on this occasion is the individuality of each human soul; our Protestant idea, the right of individual conscience and judgment; our republican idea, individual citizenship. In discussing the rights of woman, we are to consider, first, what belongs to her as an individual, in a world of her own, the arbiter of her own destiny, an imaginary Robinson Crusoe, with her woman, Friday, on a solitary island. Her rights under such circumstances are to use all her faculties for her own safety and happiness.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Secondly, if we consider her as a citizen, as a member of a great nation, she must have the same rights as all others members, according to the fundamental principles of our Government.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Thirdly, viewed as a woman, an equal factor in civilization, her rights and duties are still the same—individual happiness and development.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Fourthly, it is only the incidental relations of life, such as mother, wife, sister, daughter, which may involve some special duties and training. . .<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
The strongest reason for giving woman all the opportunities for higher education, for the full development of her faculties, her forces of mind and body; for giving her the most enlarged freedom of thought and action; a complete emancipation from all forms of bondage, of custom, dependence, superstition; from all the crippling influences of fear—is the solitude and personal responsibility of her own individual life. The strongest reason why we ask for woman a voice in the government under which she lives; in the religion she is asked to believe; equality in social life, where she is the chief factor; a place in the trades and professions, where she may earn her bread, is because of her birthright to self-sovereignty; because, as an individual, she must rely on herself. No matter how much women prefer to lean, to be protected and supported, nor how much men desire to have them do so, they must make the voyage of life alone, and for safety in an emergency, they must know something of the laws of navigation. To guide our own craft, we must be captain, pilot, engineer; with chart and compass to stand at the wheel; to watch the winds and waves, and know when to take in the sail, and to read the signs in the firmament over all. It matters not whether the solitary voyager is man or woman; nature, having endowed them equally, leaves them to their own skill and judgment in the hour of danger, and, if not equal to the occasion, alike they perish.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
To appreciate the importance of fitting every human soul for independent action, think for a moment of the immeasurable solitude of self. We come into the world alone, unlike all who have gone before us, we leave it alone, under circumstances peculiar to ourselves. No mortal ever has been, no mortal ever will be like the soul just launched on the sea of life. There can never again be just such a combination of prenatal influences; never again just such environments as make up the infancy, youth and manhood of this one. Nature never repeats herself, and the possibilities of one human soul will never be found in another. No one has ever found two blades of ribbon grass alike, and no one will ever find two human beings alike. Seeing, then, what must be the infinite diversity in human character, we can in a measure appreciate the loss to a nation when any class of the people is uneducated and unrepresented in the government.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
We ask for the complete development of every individual, first, for his own benefit and happiness. In fitting out an army, we give each soldier his own knapsack, arms, powder, his blanket, cup, knife, fork and spoon. We provide alike for all their individual necessities; then each man bears his own burden.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Again, we ask complete individual development for the general good; for the consensus of the competent on the whole round of human interests, on all questions of national life; and here each man must bear his share of the general burden. It is sad to see how soon friendless children are left to bear their own burdens, before they can analyze their feelings; before they can even tell their joys and sorrows, they are thrown on their own resources. The great lesson that nature seems to teach us at all ages in self-dependence, self-protection, self-support. . . .</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
In youth our most bitter disappointments, our brightest hopes and ambitions, are known only to ourselves. Even our friendship and love we never fully share with another; there is something of every passion, in every situation, we conceal. Even so in our triumphs and our defeats. . .<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
We ask no sympathy from others in the anxiety and agony of a broken friendship or shattered love. When death sunders our nearest ties, alone we sit in the shadow of our affliction. Alike amid the greatest triumphs and darkest tragedies of life, we walk alone. On the divine heights of human attainment, eulogized and worshipped as a hero or saint, we stand alone. In ignorance, poverty and vice, as a pauper or criminal, alone we starve or steal; alone we suffer the sneers and rebuffs of our fellows; alone we are hunted and hounded through dark courts and alleys, in by-ways and high-ways; alone we stand in the judgment seat; alone in the prison cell we lament our crimes and misfortunes; alone we expiate them on the gallows. In hours like these we realize the awful solitude of individual life, its pains, its penalties, its responsibilities, hours in which the youngest and most helpless are thrown on their own resources for guidance and consolation. Seeing, then, that life must ever be a march and a battle that each soldier must be equipped for his own protection, it is the height of cruelty to rob the individual of a single natural right.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
To throw obstacles in the way of a complete education is like putting out the eyes; to deny the rights of property is like cutting off the hands. To refuse political equality is to rob the ostracized of all self-respect; of credit in the market place; of recompense in the world of work, of a voice in choosing those who make and administer the law, a choice in the jury before whom they are tried, and in the judge who decides their punishment. Think of . . . woman’s position! Robbed of her natural rights, handicapped by law and custom at every turn, yet compelled to fight her own battles, and in the emergencies of life to fall back on herself for protection. . .<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
The young wife and mother, at the head of some establishment, with a kind husband to shield her from the adverse winds of life, with wealth, fortune and position, has a certain harbor of safety, secure against the ordinary ills of life. But to manage a household, have a desirable influence in society, keep her friends and the affections of her husband, train her children and servants well, she must have rare common sense, wisdom, diplomacy, and a knowledge of human nature. To do all this, she needs the cardinal virtues and the strong points of character that the most successful statesman possesses. An uneducated woman trained to dependence, with no resources in herself, must make a failure of any position in life. But society says women do not need a knowledge of the world, the liberal training that experience in public life must give, all the advantages of collegiate education; but when for the lack of all this, the woman’s happiness is wrecked, alone she bears her humiliation; and the solitude of the weak and the ignorant is indeed pitiable. In the wild chase for the prizes of life, they are ground to powder.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
In age, when the pleasures of youth are passed, children grown up, married and gone, the hurry and bustle of life in a measure over, when the hands are weary of active service, when the old arm chair and the fireside are the chosen resorts, then men and women alike must fall hack on their own resources. If they cannot find companionship in books, if they have no interest in the vital questions of the hour, no interest in watching the consummation of reforms with which they might have been identified, they soon pass into their dotage. The more fully the faculties of the mind are developed and kept in use, the longer the period of vigor and active interest in all around us continues. If, from a life-long participation in public affairs, a woman feels responsible for the laws regulating our system of education, the discipline of our jails and prisons, the sanitary condition of our private homes, public buildings and thoroughfares, an interest in commerce, finance, our foreign relations, in any or all these questions, her solitude will at least be respectable, and she will not be driven to gossip or scandal for entertainment.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
The chief reason for opening to every soul the doors to the whole round of human duties and pleasures is the individual development thus attained, the resources thus provided under all circumstances to mitigate the solitude that at times must come to everyone. . .<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Inasmuch, then, as woman shares equally the joys and sorrows of time and eternity, is it not the height of presumption in man to propose to represent her at the ballot box and the throne of grace, to do her voting in the state, her praying in the church, and to assume the position of high priest at the family altar?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Nothing strengthens the judgment and quickens the conscience like individual responsibility. Nothing adds such dignity to character as the recognition of one’s self-sovereignty; the right to an equal place, everywhere conceded—a place earned by personal merit, not an artificial attainment by inheritance, wealth, family and position. Conceding, then, that the responsibilities of life rest equally on man and woman, that their destiny is the same, they need the same preparation for time and eternity. The talk of sheltering woman from the fierce storms of life is the sheerest mockery, for they beat on her from every point of the compass, just as they do on man, and with more fatal results, for he has been trained to protect himself, to resist, and to conquer. Such are the facts in human experience, the responsibilities of individual sovereignty. Rich and poor, intelligent and ignorant, wise and foolish, virtuous and vicious, man and woman; it is ever the same, each soul must depend wholly on itself.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Whatever the theories may be of woman’s dependence on man, in the supreme moments of her life, he cannot bear her burdens. Alone she goes to the gates of death to give life to every man that is born into the world; no one can share her fears, no one can mitigate her pangs; and if her sorrow is greater than she can bear, alone she passes beyond the gates into the vast unknown.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
From the mountain-tops of Judea long ago, a heavenly voice bade his disciples, “Bear ye one another’s burdens”; but humanity has not yet risen to that point of self-sacrifice; and if ever so willing, how few the burdens are that one soul can bear for another! . . .<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
So it ever must be in the conflicting scenes of life, in the long, weary march, each one walks alone. We may have many friends, love, kindness, sympathy and charity, to smooth our pathway in everyday life, but in the tragedies and triumphs of human experience, each mortal stands alone.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
But when all artificial trammels are removed, and women are recognized as individuals, responsible for their own environments, thoroughly educated for all positions in life they may be called to fill; with all the resources in themselves that liberal thought and broad culture can give; guided by their own conscience and judgment, trained to self-protection, by a healthy development of the muscular system, and skill in the use of weapons and defence; and stimulated to self-support by a knowledge of the business world and the pleasure that pecuniary independence must ever give; when women are trained in this way, they will in a measure be fitted for those hours of solitude that come alike to all, whether prepared or otherwise. As in our extremity we must depend on ourselves, the dictates of wisdom point to complete individual development.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
In talking of education, how shallow the argument that each class must be educated for the special work it proposes to do, and that all those faculties not needed in this special work must lie dormant and utterly wither for want of use, when, perhaps, these will be the very faculties needed in life’s greatest emergencies! Some say, “Where is the use of drilling girls in the languages, the sciences, in law, medicine, theology. As wives, mothers, housekeepers, cooks, they need a different curriculum from boys who are to fill all positions. The chief cooks in our great hotels and ocean steamers are men. In our large cities, men run the bakeries; they make our bread, cake and pies. They manage the laundries; they are now considered our best milliners and dressmakers. Because some men fill these departments of usefulness, shall we regulate the curriculum in Harvard and Yale to their present necessities? If not, why this talk in our best colleges of a curriculum for girls who are crowding into the trades and professions, teachers in all our public schools, rapidly filling many lucrative and honorable positions in life?”. . .<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Women are already the equals of men in the whole realm of thought, in art, science, literature and government. . . . The poetry and novels of the century are theirs, and they have touched the keynote of reform, in religion, politics and social life. They fill the editor’s and professor’s chair, plead at the bar of justice, walk the wards of the hospital, speak from the pulpit and the platform. Such is the type of womanhood that an enlightened public sentiment welcomes to-day, and such the triumph of the facts of life over the false theories of the past.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Is it, then, consistent to hold the developed woman of this day within the same narrow political limits as the dame with the spinning wheel and knitting needle occupied in the past? No, no! Machinery has taken the labors of woman as well as man on its tireless shoulders; the loom and the spinning wheel are but dreams of the past; the pen, the brush, the easel, the chisel, have taken their places, while the hopes and ambitions of women are essentially changed.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
We see reason sufficient in the outer conditions of human beings for individual liberty and development, but when we consider the self-dependence of every human soul, we see the need of courage, judgment and the exercise of every faculty of mind and body, strengthened and developed by use, in woman as well as man.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
Whatever may be said of man’s protecting power in ordinary conditions, amid all the terrible disasters by land and sea, in the supreme moments of danger, alone woman must ever meet the horrors of the situation. The Angel of Death even makes no royal pathway for her. Man’s love and sympathy enter only into the sunshine of our lives. In that solemn solitude of self, that links us with the immeasurable and the eternal, each soul lives alone forever. A recent writer says: “I remember once, in crossing the Atlantic, to have gone upon the deck of the ship at midnight, when a dense black cloud enveloped the sky, and the great deep was roaring madly under the lashes of demoniac winds. My feeling was not of danger or fear (which is a base surrender of the immortal soul) but of utter desolation and loneliness; a little speck of life shut in by a tremendous darkness. . . .”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 16px;">
And yet, there is a solitude which each and every one of us has always carried with him, more inaccessible than the ice-cold mountains, more profound than the midnight sea; the solitude of self. Our inner being which we call ourself, no eye nor touch of man or angel has ever pierced. It is more hidden than the caves of the gnome; the sacred adytum of the oracle; the hidden chamber of Eleusinian mystery, for to it only omniscience is permitted to enter.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #3a4592; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 16px;">
Such is individual life. Who, I ask you, can take, dare take on himself the rights, the duties, the responsibilities of another human soul?<br />

First up, Amber and I made our way to <a href="http://www.foodswings.net/">Foodswings</a> vegan diner, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
I got a chopped salad, potato skins (bacun bits, cheddar cheese – homemade,
sour cream), and a “crunchberries” milk shake – strawberry ice cream with
Oreo-type cookies blended in. The salad was okay, the potatoes were good, and
the milkshake was magical! Afterward we went to what I would describe as an
overpriced hipster yard sale store! They were selling secondhand items for $10
that at a regular yard sale you would get 50-cents for! Then, we went to a most
amazing store, <a href="http://www.villagevoice.com/bestof/2009/award/best-latin-arts-store-1436398/">Fuego 718</a>. So much cool stuff - I’m a huge fan of Dia de Los

of it!</div>

Then a quick subway ride to <a href="http://dunwelldoughnuts.com/">Dun-well Doughnuts</a>. I got one with raspberry icing, and one with peanut butter icing
filled with raspberry jelly. MAGICAL. I ate the (very squished) half of the
peanut butter one I had left when we got to the airport the next day. </div>

After that, we needed to see Trader Joes - we've never been. We went to the one in Manhattan – saw
the line – didn’t buy anything. One of the employees told us they do the same
amount of business at that one in a day than the others do in 2 weeks! <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Will go to the new Sarasota location for all
the yummy, inexpensive stuff next month. I have pined for a Trader Joes here for
YEARS. They need to hurry up and build one in Orlando! </div>

</style> Yes, I got back from NYC almost a week ago... the posting is a little belated. Oopsie. I was doing pretty good with writing in the morning before Amber got up, but I didn't want to get too behind with <a href="http://cfvegfest.org/">Central Florida Veg Fest</a> and <a href="http://carnism.com/">CAAN</a> organizing, so I worked on that instead. Sorry, Vegan MoFo! So, here is Day 3...<br />

Walked to Strictly Vegetarian again today. We were way too
proud of ourselves that we walked the 8(?) blocks to there, the bank and the
post office without Pj! I had <a href="http://www.vegetariantimes.com/recipe/sorrel-drink/">sorrel</a>, a veggie patty (empanada with beans and
veggies), and a piece of carrot cake.</div>

Dinner was pizza made by Pj, and assisted by
Amber and me. We made: margarita, Pineapple & Onion,
Radiccio, <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>and Spinach. Pj made her own
crust, and her own *magical* cashew-based cheese, which was given an “aged” taste with
vegan probiotics. Her (all non-vegan) family was there, and they all loved the
pizza. </div>

I changed this recipe up all over the place, all the while, sticking to it's basic concept. Does anyone want to guess what I put inside? (Tob, Heidi, Mom, you know you know!)<br />
<ul>
<li>First, the ricotta. I cannot afford pine nuts. And if I could, the hospital would come and take them away in lieu of payment towards our outstanding balance. Instead, I used tried and trusted cashews. I think walnuts would have been good too. I did add basil to my batch. Easy peasy!</li>
<li>My filling consisted of sauteed kale (I shredded it into tiny morsels), grated zucchini (ding ding ding!), diced onions and garlic.</li>
<li>I used jar pasta sauce. </li>
<li>Unlike Heidi, who uses no oil (Engine2 diet), I did spray my sheet pan before I assembled/baked. Although, I suspect that may not even be necessary. Even with out a silicon baking sheet.</li>
<li>Assembly was pretty straight forward. Deceivingly simple. I did use a touch of water at the corners to help them stick together. I did not brush the tops with olive oil, nor did I spray them with oil. They browned up just fine. </li>
<li>Verdict: This recipe was really good, really pretty simple, versatile; You could pretty much put anything in these bad boys. I would like them with some Italian sausage (Tofurkey or Field Roast). Two thumbs up, we will make this again. I may just stick them in a cupcake pan and fill them and bake them instead of folding them, for an even speedier version!</li>
</ul>

<li><span style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">For some reason, I can't keep a bag of chocolate chips in the house without someone busting into them almost immediately and without me being in the room to bust them. I made up the difference with some super dark chocolate that I had in the cupboard. (Why couldn't the thief just eat that?) I don't own a microwave, so I use the double boil method. Slow and low. </span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">Meanwhile, I blended the tofu with milk. The recipe calls for soy cream, but I used <a href="http://www.thelowcarbgrocery.com/catalog/images/BlueDiamondAlmondCoconutMilkVanilla.JPG" target="_blank">Blue Diamond Almond Coconut milk</a>. The recipe also calls for coco powder, and even though I have that, I opted for the <a href="http://content.costco.com/Images/Content/Product/554492.jpg" target="_blank">Dark Hot Chocolate mix</a> that I have. </span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">The last change that I made was this: When blending the mousse, I added 1/2 of the melted chocolate to the mixture. </span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">After layering the vanilla graham cookies on the bottom, then the sliced strawberries, and drizzled the agave (just a touch), I added the mousse, then the melted chocolate on the top. </span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="color: #3f3617; font-family: Mountains of Christmas;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">Verdict: Oh my goooooooooey goodness! This was so incredibly rich and delish! One change that I would make is that I would maybe not layer in the strawberries, as they leak and the next day the cookies are a soggy mess. That isn't entirely bad, I know, but not too appetizing. I would also make these in smaller portion sizes b/c it is so rich! All in all, a BIG hit and two thumbs up from chef mom.</span></span></div>

<div style="color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;">
I started this weeks kitchen adventure with the 15 Minute Creamy Avocado Pasta. I admit, this one left me skeptical. I mean, I like me some avocado. But that is usually as guacamole, or chopped in salad with a zingy dressing. But as a pasta sause base? I wasn't too sure I would like it. However, I went forth as a brave young (ha!) soldier. </div>
<div style="color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; text-align: left;">
I followed the recipe with no changes. I used regular {wheat} shell pasta.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #3f3617; font-family: Mountains of Christmas;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">Blending the lemon, garlic and basil, touch of sea salt and the olive oil. I'm with Heidi on this one. With the richness of the avocado, the olive oil could easily be replaced with water. </span></span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="color: #3f3617; font-family: Mountains of Christmas;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">This review is as quick as it was to make this recipe. It was a breeze to make. Only took as long as the pasta took to cook. Everything was tossed together and served right away.</span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3f3617; font-family: Mountains of Christmas;"><span style="line-height: 22px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #3f3617; font-family: Mountains of Christmas;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">The verdict: DEEEEELISH! This pasta was outta-sight tight! Before I got a chance to try it, the hubby was exclaiming it's awesomeness. He had a huge serving and wanted me to make it again the next night. Even the littles ate their generous portions. The avocado disappeared into the lemon, garlic and basil and just became the creamy in the creamy goodness of this dish. This recipe is quick, simple and can easily become one of the redundant meals that we add to our rotation. If I had more than 2 thumbs, they would all be up! </span></span><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Gc6ydCqKZ4U/UF-FLhtCy6I/AAAAAAAACfA/hj8aFSCaypA/s640/blogger-image-567287245.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Gc6ydCqKZ4U/UF-FLhtCy6I/AAAAAAAACfA/hj8aFSCaypA/s400/blogger-image-567287245.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

We started out in super touristy Times Square, stopped at
St. Patrick’s to get my mom a souvenir. After a few wrong turns, we found the
<a href="http://www.cinnamonsnail.com/">Cinnamon Snail</a> food truck.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>All vegan,
sandwiches, chili, amazing baked goods. I got the portobello<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>sandwich, with capers, olive tapenade and
arugula on chibatta. Olives are the only food I generally avoid, but the
sandwich, olives and all, was amazing. <i>If you live in New York, this and all my
posts this week will probably be very boring to you, but I am a practically professional seeker of
delicious vegan food, and I have been crazy excited about all the choices here.</i></div>

We took our food to Central Park. The park is beautiful, but
all those carriage horses suffering made me sad and angry. <a href="http://www.banhdc.org/ch-why.shtml">Here</a> is a list of
what is wrong with the carriage horse industry in NYC. I knew I wouldn’t want
to stand by and do nothing about it, so before I left for the trip, I printed
out copies of the list to give to people that looked like they were thinking
about taking a ride, but we did not give out very many. We’ll be back on
Saturday to give out the rest. WAR is going to send me a file with a better
brochure to hand out. Let me know if you go to NYC and want to do some
leafleting.</div>

Next stop was Tom’s Restaurant, the diner that Seinfeld and
his friends supposedly went to all the time. Of course, it didn’t look the same
inside, since the show was filmed in California, and the menu was so NOT
vegan-friendly, so we booked it back over to Midtown to Fashion Ave, which was
also a bust. Pj, our friend that’s getting married and we are here visiting,
didn’t find the accessories she wanted for her wedding outfit.</div>

subway Chinatown – Vegetarian Dim Sum Restaurant. I had no idea what to order,
I’ve only gotten dim sum once in my life, so I just picked out 6 things. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Most of them were kind of weird. I’m a pretty
adventurous eater, my motto is generally “if its vegan its for me!” so I liked
everything except one thing. I think we ordered: monk rolls, rice with Chinese
kale (this was the yucky one), spring rolls, dumplings, and.... other dumplings.</div>

they had to order a new one. So, I sampled the butterscotch, peanut butter
& maple, and strawberry flavors of their regular ice cream. They make their
own cashew-based ice cream. I got a cone of the butterscotch kind, though I
wish I also tried the orange blossom kind first. </span></h3>

except hit up Trader Joe’s. There’s no Trader Joe’s in Orlando, and we’ve heard
that the new one in Sarasota (closest one to Orlando, 2.5 hours away) is sold
out of stuff all the time. </div>

<br />
<a href="http://www.veganmofo.com/">Vegan MoFo</a> during the month of October. That's right, we'll be posting at least 20 times about vegan FOOD. Some of the topics will be...<br />
<ul>
<li>Two of your fair editors, Jessi and Amber, are going to New York City for a (vegan) wedding, and to EAT, shop and see the sights of course! So, we'll be talking about our adventures in vegan wedding cake making, cool things we saw, restaurants we ate at, etc. etc.</li>
<li>Jessi will be posting about her weekly meal plan project. Every weekend, she cooks up a storm for herself and three friends to have already prepared lunch and dinner through out the week. </li>
<li>Pippi will be posting about her weekly recipe review project. Every week, she and some of her family (throughout the U.S.) choose three recipes to experiment with and/or veganize, then they share the results with each other, and with us!</li>
<li>If you need some new ideas for meals, motivation to get in the kitchen, and/or encouragement to save money on food – stand by – help is on the way!</li>
</ul>
AND, November 10-11 will be our second Online Bake Sale Auction, to benefit four charities (one for each editor). You bid, and we mail the goodies to you! In March we raised over $1000, so we're doing it again! Mark your calendars!<br />

We have been picking 2 main courses and a sweet treat. But there are no rules that it has to be this way.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;" />
<span style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">Sometimes we all cook them all and sometimes we just will get around to making one or two. We all end up doing different things, either because we don't have or don't like a particular ingredient. Maybe we have extra items in the re-fridge/freeze or cupboard that need to be used up. Sometimes we just forget something at the store. Or we are inspired by the recipe to go an entirely different direction.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;" />
<span style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">I have found this project pretty fun. I have also found that it's taking some of the redundancy out of meal planning. And it get's me in the kitchen with the kiddos (homeschool holler!) trying those drool-icious re-pinned pinterest recipes that I probably would otherwise never try.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;" />
<span style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">Lately, I have extended this project outside our our little family group. So because our family facebook group is a closed group and we cannot share what is going on, I decided that I will post my recipe reviews on my blog so that I can share and other's can share their experiences in the comments section here!</span><br />

<span style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;">I pretty much followed the recipe.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px;" />
<ul style="background-color: #fff8e3; color: #3f3617; font-family: 'Mountains of Christmas'; font-size: 16px; line-height: 22px; list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em;">
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">I only had one small cucumber from my garden so I used the entire thing in the sauce and didn't add any extra slices to my layers. </li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">I diced the tomatoes for ease in eating. I would like to do what Heidi did and add some diced red or green onion as well, next time. A little extra cucumber, diced, would be nice too, but with the sauce, it wasn't necessary.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">Even though I used plain yogurt (<a href="http://img5.findthebest.com/sites/default/files/686/media/images/WholeSoy_Co._Soy_Plain_6oz.jpg" style="color: black; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">WholeSoy</a>), I found it sweet. I added a bit extra lemon juice and some <a href="http://ninecooks.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451fa5069e20168e63ec9be970c-800wi" style="color: black; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">spike</a> to mask the sweetness. I think I would add a little bit of dill next time as well. I just learned that there is an unsweetened version of this, but I'll need to request it at my store.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">Verdict: This recipe is a keeper! So easy and it keeps in the fridge well. Two thumbs up!</li>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">Yesterday I attended a motorcycle safety class. The first half of the first day was classroom instruction, followed by a test. I scored a 100. After breaking for lunch, we met on the training course.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">The training course was an asphalt parking lot. It was the hottest day in Texas so far this summer – 107°. All students were required to wear long pants, long sleeves, boots (at least over the ankle), full fingered gloves, and DOT approved helmets.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">I knew I was in trouble pretty early on. We had to walk our bikes from an upper lot down to the lower lot where the course was set up. I struggled to keep the 300 pound beast upright, but nearly lost it once. The instructor told me to “just drop it – you can’t hurt it” but I was determined not to be the person who dropped their bike before I even got on it. With the instructor’s help, I got the bike back upright and somehow woman-handled it down to the safety course, although I was lagging far behind my five other classmates.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">I needed water, but the instructor said we would break soon. My heart was racing and I just didn’t seem to be able to catch my breath. But I couldn’t wimp out! I just couldn’t! AFTER ALL, I’M A VEGAN! I am an ambassador for all vegans and I must make my brothers and sisters proud. As a vegan, I feel I am constantly being judged, and I don’t want to come up short. If I am too much or too little of anything, my veganism will be blamed for it, so I can’t wimp out!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: 100%;">We finally took a quick water break but it was over in two minutes and we were back on the bikes. The asphalt was burning my feet through the soles of my vegan boots. We did some exercises on the motorcycles, practicing using the clutch and brakes and going very slowly.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">At some point I began to realize that I did not have all my faculties about me. But my judgment was impaired, and I chose to try and ignore the fact that I was losing it. My shirt was soaked with sweat and I was afraid I was going to lose my pants, because they were so heavy with sweat. My heart was pounding out of my chest and I told the instructor that I needed to put some ice around my neck. He said he could not allow me to do that if I wanted to complete the course. Each and every segment must be completed and it is not fair for the others to wait on me while I cool off. He said we would break in 20 minutes and asked if I could make it. I said “I guess we’ll see.”</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">The next thing I knew, the instructor was headed for the shade trees where our coolers were. One of the other women in the class had left her bike and stumbled over to the trees, where she fell onto her back in the shade. I was so grateful that we were taking a break and that I wasn’t the one who wimped out first. Plus, she was considerably younger than I am.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">While the instructor called 911, one of the other students worked with me to cool our fallen comrade as much as possible. She was obviously scared to death and said that she couldn’t feel her legs. She asked me to phone her husband. The ambulance arrived and took her to the hospital.</span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: 100%;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
Meanwhile, we had wasted precious time and the instructor rushed us back to the course. I knew that the hottest part of the day was still ahead, and I decided that I didn’t want to end up in the hospital, so I told the instructor that I was out. Two hundred dollars down the tube. Cha-ching!</div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">As I made the Walk of Shame back to my car, I realized that both of my arms were numb. I made it to the car, got in, and blasted the air conditioning. I drank a quart of water and sucked on ice cubes. I took the electronic temperature gauge that I keep in my car and pointed it at the ground next to the shade where I was parked. The reading was 131° and I felt sure that it was even hotter down on the course. My head was pounding and I just wanted to get home.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">After a couple of extra strength Tylenol, some cold fresh fruit, and a long nap in front of the air conditioner, I felt considerably better. Thinking back over the day’s events I realized that my veganism was part of the reason I insisted on sticking it out as long as possible. I hold myself to a higher standard. And I think others do, as well. If I had been the first to leave, or the only one to leave, I don’t think anyone would have blamed my age or my gender. It would be that “I don’t eat meat and therefore I am deprived of the nutrients my body requires in order to function.” Any time we (vegans) get sick, others suspect that it’s because of the way we eat.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">I think there are many times when, because of my veganism, I hold myself to a higher standard. I have just about perfected the vegan cupcake, and I make them for non-vegans every chance I get. I would not offer a non-vegan a vegan cupcake that was only “okay” or just “pretty good.” My cupcakes are awesome and they stand up to any non-vegan cupcake. When I take a dish to a non-vegan potluck, I do my damndest to make sure that mine is the best dish there. When I attend a large event and I am served the only vegan dish in the room, I make sure everyone at my table knows how much better my meal is than whatever slop is on their plates.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">My dogs can go for years without so much as a hiccup. But the first time one of them has any type of health issue whatsoever, I am criticized for not giving them meat.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">Am I so accustomed to defending my veganism that it has made me defensive when I don’t need to be?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;">Is this just my own personal neurosis, or do others experience this “higher standard” phenomenon?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: georgia; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">

Or maybe I will make you wait until issue 7 of the 'zine! : )Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2576428338001280827.post-73236063971594010072012-03-26T20:38:00.003-06:002012-03-26T20:44:45.311-06:00Bake Sale Results<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pWE5tX9VtBU/T3EpeeHR8gI/AAAAAAAAALM/aK_bXF9ERjQ/s1600/cupcake1.jpg"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pWE5tX9VtBU/T3EpeeHR8gI/AAAAAAAAALM/aK_bXF9ERjQ/s200/cupcake1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5724402204821025282" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:100%;"><span class="messageBody" ft="{"type":3}">The official number is in... we made $1,042 on the bake sale!!!
