Join FARM in Observing Food Day on October 24!

Dear Friend,

The month of October has become national "Food Month," offering an opportunity to save millions of animal lives by promoting a vegan diet. It began with World Vegetarian Day and World Farm Animals Day on October 1st and 2nd, continues with World Food Day on October 16th, and culminates with Food Day on October 24th and World Go Vegan Week on October 24th-31st.

The most influential among these is Food Day, launched this year by our good friends at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. CSPI has been dubbed "The Food Police," because of its frequent exposés of the deadly flaws of the standard American diet. The goals of this new national observance include promoting safe, healthy foods and protecting the environment, animals, and farm workers. More than 1,100 events have been registered thus far throughout the U.S.

Food Day organizers have invited FARM supporters to bring vegan literature to Food Day events in their communities, or to organize their own Food Day event!

Potbelly Pig Sanctuary in Florida needs our help!

I recently learned about a farm animal sanctuary, Peace At Last Farms, just a couple hours from me, that needed to relocate immediately due to a divorce-related foreclosure. I have been fundraising for them for the last month or so, but they still need help with funding to finish building new pens at the new property, moving the remainder of the animals, and general funding to get back on their feet, including money for spay/neuter of some new momma pigs and their babies that were dumped on their property recently.

an annual event that helps spread the word about the treatment of animals on factory farms and raises vital funds for our rescue, education and advocacy work.

The Walks are an important part of Farm Sanctuary’s history and our outreach and fundraising efforts. They are also a great way for supporters to help send a positive message of compassion and hope for farm animals.

Each year, the Walks are more successful, attracting more participants and raising more money to help abused animals. They are positive events that bring together people who care about what factory farming is doing to animals, people and the environment.

This year we are happy to welcome our first-ever Walk spokesperson, celebrity trainer Bob Harper, from the TV show The Biggest Loser. Bob is just as passionate about farm animal protection as he is about health and fitness, so we’re thrilled he’s joined us to speak out for animals.

Walks occur across the U.S. and in Canada in September and October. They are organized and run by volunteers, and it is their incredible commitment and talent that makes these events so successful. All of your generous contributions go straight to Farm Sanctuary.

If you are interested in participating in a Farm Sanctuary Walk for Farm Animals, please check out the Find a 2010 Walk page to see if there is an event in your community. You can register either online, or through the mail

World Farm Animals Day

HOPE and Theresa

Early in 2010, I remember my friend Mia telling me about a new cow that came to live at for the Animals sanctuary. Her name was Hope and she was different from the other bovines that came to the sanctuary because she was 3 years-old when she arrived. So unlike the others, she spent years on a dairy farm getting brutalized by the farmers that were trying to repeatedly impregnate her. You see on a dairy farm humans manually impregnate the cows in pens that the dairy industry itself coined the "rape rack". Hope was afraid of humans and rightfully so. Once the sanctuary was able to save her, it took a lot of patience and love to try to earn her trust. Hope was extremely sensitive to anyone touching her hind area, even someone brushing up against her would send her running away. Getting her in an enclosed area to give her medication or vaccines was, and still is, impossible. Too many bad memories... Too much fear. Imagine being so afraid of being tormented that you would jump over a 6' fence from a standing position just to get away from it... then imagine that you weigh 2000 pounds. I can only imagine what she endured and how horrible it made her feel for her to be able to do just that. Hope jumped over a 6' fence from a standing position to get away.

Now I didn't visit the sanctuary until March of 2010, and Hope was there for about 3 months then. Although she was slowly coming around to Debbie and Steve, the sanctuary's founders, she was still very much afraid of visitors. On my visit, Debbie and I walked out onto the pasture to where the animals were so I could see Hope and Amy, the newest rescued calf from the same dairy farm Hope came from. Hope was lying down on the grass when we got there. Debbie told me that she was likely to run when I approach her so I shouldn't be surprised. After being in the pasture for a little while I decided to try to say hello to Hope, and if she wanted to get away that would be fine. I walked towards her slowly and then when I was a little closer got on my knees to approach her from a less domineering position. To my and Debbie's surprise I was able to come all the way toward her and even brush my hand against her beautiful face. The feeling that this girl, filled with fear, trusted me enough to let me close enough to touch her almost made me cry. After experiencing only bad from humans, Hope was trying to forgive and let these new people into her life. She is stronger than anyone I know. I can not name a single living being that has been through what she has and was still willing to give someone else another chance.

I know I have been hurt many times in the past, not in the same brutal ways Hope has of course. And even I have a hard time letting people in. If I had to endure only torture and pain for years, for my entire life, I don't believe I would have her strength. She is my inspiration. If she can be strong enough to forgive and try to trust again, well, maybe I can too. So many people think they can only learn from each other. I have learned more from animals than anyone would ever imagine. I wish people would realize how their "personal decisions" to consume meat and dairy products affect innocent lives... Hope is one of billions. She is still working on trusting us all, and getting better every day. Billions of others did not and will not have the same opportunity to heal.

p.s. And by the way... Hope came from a "family" dairy farm, not those giant factory farms that most people think are the bad places. There is no way a living being can be used as a product and treated "humanely". All of our decisions have flesh and blood consequences.

Keep Hope in your heart

After years of being forced to bear calves and having them torn from her so the farmers could sell her milk, Hope was no longer able to get pregnant and produce enough milk. Normally she and all the other cows who can no longer easily get pregnant or produce large quantities of milk are sent to slaughter, because the farmers cannot economically justify feeding them.

Just this year alone hundreds of thousands of America's dairy cows are being ground into hamburgers because milk prices have dropped so low that farmers can no longer afford to feed any animals that are not producing the largest amounts of milk. The pressure to provide cheap milk also means that these cows are forced to take hormones, antibiotics, and not given adequate vet care, which takes a toll on their bodies in addition to the stress of multiple pregnancies.

However instead of ending up at a slaughterhouse, Hope was spared when a rescue stepped in to help save her.

They brought the frightened cow to for the Animals sanctuary, where she quickly fit in with another new arrival, Amy, a young calf discarded by the dairy industry as a milk by-product and destined for slaughter. The two became close friends, and the motherless-calf and the mother who had lost her many babies quickly became a second-chance family.

Sadly, sweet Hope has dislocated her hip. Honoring Hope and sending much love and positivity to a little patch of heaven in Blairstown.

VeganEtsy Team Contribution for the FARM Auction

Sadly, Jessi and I cannot attend the Animal Rights Conference in Washington D.C. this year. So when Cindi Saadi of FARM USA wrote to the VeganEtsy Team seeking auction contributions, I knew this was a chance to be there in spirit. Besides, it's a great cause and the team is generous and jumps at the chance to help educate, outreach and save animals.

With only a very small window with which to seek contributions, some of the team members sent in contributions on an individual basis. (Would LOVE to see some of those items! hint hint) Even with the time crunch, the team pulled together and got their items in to me. Even as far away as Wales, UK! (Thanks to our very own 'zine project contributor, Kim Shay)

Here are a few of these items. Oh! By the way, Starrlight Jewelry wins for best smelling contribution. As part of her contribution, she included Kona Coffee from Hawaii!

My, oh, my, I almost couldn't resist! As the team leader, Starrlight also sent in a small VeganEtsy team promo package and a Team Sampler Package which included items like a "vegan" patch, bracelets and pins. She also included a beautiful hand painted cameo necklace.Who wouldn't look amazing in that? (I'm sorry I didn't take individual photos! The items contributed are high quality crafts! We are all hopeful they will save many, many lives and do great work. We are all here to lend them our support and stand behind them in pride.

Pippi's enthusiasm has already spread to several of her friends to help donate their time and expertise to getting the message out, and donating and also helping to facilitate the shop as well. One person sure can make a difference, it only takes some action.

International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos

Lily Tomlin Wants YOU to Participate in IDA’s International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos!

“It’s time to stop keeping elephants in zoos, where they are suffering and dying prematurely purely as a result of their captivity in small and unnatural displays. That’s why I’m urging everyone to get involved in the International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos on June 19, a unique outreach event that brings the world together to stop the suffering.”

Elephants are highly intelligent individuals. In the wild, they range tens of miles a day, living in large, tight-knit family groups and socializing with a network of elephants that numbers in the hundreds. Yet a typical trip to the zoo reveals just a few elephants confined in miserably small pens, where lack of movement and standing on hard surfaces cause painful foot infections and arthritis that often lead to premature death. Repetitive swaying and rocking, unseen wild elephants, is a sign of deep psychological distress.
The elephants need your help. Please join IDA and Lily Tomlin in putting an end to their suffering by taking part in the International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos.

The Pet Postcard Project.
Here's the scoop: "Pet Postcards" for this project are homemade postcards featuring your own pets that you make and then snail mail into The Pet Postcard Project. Each card you send earns food for shelter dogs (sometimes 1 pound per card, sometimes more!). So far, this project has earned 90,000 lbs of food and $18,000 for shelter animals, and has received thousands of cards -- funny, weird, sad, cute, profound, and above all, all filled with LOVE for a beloved pet. The ONLY real requirements are that the words you use be a "dog or cat confession" or "dog or cat advice" or "dog or cat wishes" or "dog or cat excuses," and that your cards be somewhat creative.

DawnWatch: BP oil disaster -- coverage highlights. Please ask the media for more

The biggest news for animals over the last week has been the BP oil catastrophe in the gulf. Millions of animals, including 5,000 dolphins, endangered tortoises, pelicans, and countless fish live in that gulf and are dying slow and agonizing deaths from ingesting and inhaling the oil that our species has been vomiting into their home at a rate of 200,000 gallons per day. I find myself thinking of Avatar, where humans were invading Pandora after having totally trashed Earth. Think of what the Gulf of Mexico was like just weeks ago, and what it is like now: it seems that we really are going to completely trash our planet if we don't change our ways, and change fast.

I happened to see a screening of the movie "Fuel" last week. Winner of the 2008 Best Documentary award at the Sundance Film Festival, it is now more timely than ever. It focuses on what our dependence on oil is doing to us and the earth, and it gives clean energy solutions. The BP explosion came just weeks after President Obama announced plans for more offshore drilling along our coastlines, an announcement that broke the hearts of environmentalists who had thought they had elected a president with similar values. While it is hard, as an animal holocaust is underway in the gulf, to even think of a silver lining, it seemed at first that at least this blanket of oil over the gulf would bury those plans. Yet as oil poured into the gulf Obama said, "Let me be clear. I continue to believe that domestic oil production is an important part of our overall strategy for energy security.''

The moratorium the administration has announced on new offshore drilling is for three weeks -- until the cause of the BP explosion is determined. It doesn't take into account that the next accident that wipes out a different ocean might have a different cause.

I have been scouring the media for animal news from the gulf. There isn't much. CNN's Brooke Baldwin has been on the scene at the gulf. I happened to tune in the first day she took a boat out to the spill. The boat pulled up alongside a sea turtle who we saw coming up trying to get air in the midst of the oil. At least 30 sea turtles have washed up dead so far.

I was shocked by the May 5 Washington Post story, by Juliet Eilperin, headed "U.S. exempted BP's Gulf of Mexico drilling from environmental impact study."
It tells us,
"The Interior Department exempted BP's calamitous Gulf of Mexico drilling operation from a detailed environmental impact analysis last year." It discusses the "decision by the department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) to give BP's lease at Deepwater Horizon a 'categorical exclusion' from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)."

Media interviews with representatives from the Center for Biological Diversity about that exemption, and the lobby money behind it, are well worth watching. Two of the most compelling have been on media outlets on the opposite end of the political spectrum, reminding us that environmentalism, like animal protection, need not be a partisan issue.

The Center for Biological Diversity is calling for the resignation of big oil buddy, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, in light of the Gulf calamity. You can read more about Salazar at:

Animal advocates need to learn more about Salazar. His department is also responsible for the recent delisting of Grey Wolves as an endangered species. Further, the "All-Creatures" animal advocacy site has a petition to have him removed as Interior Secretary due to his support for the ranching community and participation in the mustang round-ups and decimation of America's wild horse population. Despite the animal annihilation underway in the Gulf, I have found relatively little information on animal news lists about the issue. I was therefore struck by Joshua Green's superb blog on the website for The Atlantic, headed "No Energy," in which he discusses what seems to be a lack of appropriate outrage. He shares the Obama quote that I shared above, Obama's commitment to more drilling, and he writes:

"In the wake of the Gulf oil spill, the benefits of clean sources of energy are clearer than ever. What's so infuriating about the Washington response so far is that there's no indication the disaster has prompted Obama or anyone else to reconsider his position. In the past, major disasters shifted the terms of debate. This time, nobody is budging. .... Washington eventually responds to public outrage. (Just ask Goldman Sachs.) But for now, energy can join the long list of issues on which Washington leadership has vanished."

Meatless Monday

Mario Batali to embrace Meatless Monday in all of his 14 restaurants across the country.

"The fact is, most people in the U.S. eat way more meat than is good for them or the planet," maintains Batali. "Asking everyone to go vegetarian or vegan isn't a realistic or attainable goal. The 40th anniversary of Earth Day is just around the corner on April 22, John Robbins says there is one dire environmental problem that remains unaddressed: Eating meat.

“We are going to have a lot of Earth Day celebrations, surely that was the case for the 20th anniversary,” he says. “And at a lot of the celebrations, there will be meat served—and I find that hard to understand.”

Forty years after an estimated 20 million people celebrated the first Earth Day, the budding environmental concern that sprouted the tradition has become full-fledged fervor. Deforestation is rampant, key resources are tapped or limited, and global warming is, it can seem, all we hear about. Also in that time, environmentalism has become synonymous with “being green,” a new millennium whirlwind trend that, we’re told, means changing to energy-saving light bulbs, using reusable grocery bags, and driving hybrid cars. But when it comes to the world’s most pressing ecological problems—climate change, land degradation, air and water pollution, loss of biodiversity—it is now a documented fact that a plant-based diet is the most effective way to help curb all of them.

“It’s phenomenal to me that groups come out with articles and lists like ’20 Things You Can Do To Change the Environment,’ and will list things like drive a fuel-efficient car and change your light bulbs, but they won’t say ‘eat less meat,’” says Robbins. “In not saying ‘eat more plants and fewer animals,’ they are omitting the single most significant, most powerful, most meaningful action you can take.”

While Facebook and other social media is good for disseminating information, a prevailing notion was that perhaps it deterred some activism as the time spent chatting and reading others posts could be spent fighting for the animals.

I am inspired by their words and hope to use social media to advance a campaign in which we ditch social media for a week and devote that time to the animals. World Week for Laboratory Animal Liberation is almost here. I propose that we spend this week or next figuring out how much time we spend each day online. Then, let’s take 3 days during Laboratory Week for Animal Liberation to devote this amount of time to the animals (or any other social justice movement in which you are involved).
Let’s use Facebook for it’s good for and promote this event! Please see the Facebook invitation and invite others!!!

May is Guardian Month

IDA’s Guardian Campaign is the only animal rights project that lets you help animals simply by changing the words you use to talk about them. From the comfort of your couch, while talking on the phone, when writing to your newspaper, you can improve the lives of real animals just by choosing the right words and encouraging others to do the same.
To start, all we ask is that you replace one simple word with another simple but more accurate word: replace “owner” with “guardian” whenever you discuss the animals who share our lives. Any situation where you would normally refer to an animal “owner,” use “guardian” instead. That’s it – you’re now an activist in IDA’s Guardian Campaign. You should start feeling empowered any minute now. And I bet your dog just wagged her tail – she understands the difference. Wouldn’t you rather have a guardian than an owner?

It couldn’t be simpler – you don’t have to march, buy any new product, or send us money. Since May is IDA’s annual Guardian Month, now is the perfect time to get involved and make a difference right in your own backyard.
Certainly you’re asking how this language change will help animals. A “guardian” has an entirely different relationship with animals than does an “owner.” And that relationship works out better for the animals, starting with those who share your home and expanding throughout your community. This simple change reinforces and increases respect, responsibility and compassion. By eliminating the concept that animals are "property" that we can own and dispose of, and replacing it with a new idea of their place in society, we actually change their status. This change in status will grant them new rights, and these new rights will gradually force into history at least the worst indignities suffered by our non-human kin. It will be much harder for the law to allow the perpetual confinement of veal crates or the outright torture that drives the circus and vivisection industries once society accepts that animals cannot be “owned.”

We need your help to promote the Guardian Campaign. Everything you need can be found at www.guardiancampaign.org, including ideas to promote language change, and educational and marketing materials you can order or download and print.
Examples of ways you can help include emailing your friends and family about the campaign, posting the Guardian website on your Facebook page, or distributing brochures. You can ask your community’s animal-related organizations to adopt the language, and send a letter to your newspaper. We have educational lesson plans on the website that you can use to educate kids. You can even change the language in your city ordinances, replacing “owner” with “guardian.” We can show you how others have already successfully changed their laws.

The Cows Came Home....almost!

Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven't posted any recent updates on the 3 steers. Our lives got very crazy after we adopted them, and we are just now figuring it all out. Long story short, we have to move at the end of May and will no longer have the land for these sweet boys. We have been frantically searching for a permanent home for them and just found a sanctuary in CA that has agreed to adopt them for life! We just have to raise the money to get them there and help them build a shelter for these boys. I created a new chipin site and wrote a longer update here:

I am hoping we can all come together one more time for these boys. Once they get there, they will be in their forever home for good!

It's that simple. If you want to participate but cannot do so during the "official" time period, get in touch with us—we've got you covered. We strive to be as inclusive as possible.
There are only two rules:

Goods sold must be vegan. For baking, most importantly this means no dairy or eggs.
Don't sell or distribute anything during the bake sale (books, brochures, etc.) that contributes to the intentional harming of animals.

In the United States, an estimated 95% of egg-laying hens are intensively confined in battery cages.
As of December 2008, about 300 million birds are confined in battery cages, almost one for every U.S. citizen.
Each cage confines 5 or 6 birds on average, but sometimes up to 10 birds.
Voluntary industry guidelines specify a minimum of 67 square inches per hen. This is an area smaller than a standard sheet of paper.
Like any animal, chickens are highly motivated to perform natural behaviors. These behaviors include nesting, perching, scratching, foraging, dust-bathing, exploring, and stretching. Caged chickens are denied all of these natural behaviors, causing them severe frustration.
Battery hens suffer from serious health problems, such as respiratory disease from constant exposure to ammonia fumes and fecal dust; osteoporosis, bone fractures, and prolapsed uteruses from being bred to lay eggs at an unnaturally high rate; and foot disorders, sores, and injuries from contact with the cage wire in outdated cage systems.
As a response to the lack of foraging opportunities in the barren cage environment, chickens sometimes engage in feather-pecking of their cagemates. So, before they are 10 days old, the ends of their beaks are seared off with hot blades.
Beak mutilation causes acute and sometimes chronic pain.
For every egg you buy, a hen will be forced to endure these conditions for over 32 hours.
Chickens are confined for about a year and a half before their ability to lay eggs declines, then they are killed.
Eggs are not a necessary part of a nutritious diet, and there are many healthy, affordable alternatives that make it easy to leave eggs off of your shopping list for good. Some good egg alternatives include applesauce, bananas, commercial egg replacer powder (such as Ener-G Egg Replacer or Bob's Red Mill All Natural Egg Replacer) ground flaxseed, tofu, or vinegar and baking soda.
The egg industry cannot be trusted to make responsible decisions regarding the welfare of chickens, because it has a profit motive to sacrifice their interests. There are currently no U.S. federal laws that protect the interests of chickens used for food.

Can't wait for it to come out, it's gonna be a good one.

“Peace To All Creatures” Zine

The world can never have enough vegan-themed zines, so I was happy to see another one hitting the shelves last year titled “Peace to All Creatures.” Designwise, it’s quite nice, with an attractive color cover, nice photography (including a shot by yours truly in the second issue), and articles split into three categories: animals, veg diet & health, and social & green issues. The zine is edited by Pippi Howard from Colorado and Jessi VanPelt from Orlando (yes, seriously, it’s a zine that’s not produced in Portland!) and all of the writers in the first issue are women. Peace to All Creatures: 'Zine Review

"Peace to All Creatures" is a new 'zine edited and designed by Pippi Howard of Uber Duper Creations and Jessi Van Pelt of Ginger Card Company. I have worked with Jessi and Pippi on some on-line projects to raise money for animals in need, and I knew that they were both committed to helping animals, but I really did not know what to expect when a friend asked me to review it. My first answer was "I'm not a vegan!" Pippi assured me that the 'zine was for everyone, and she was right.

There are three sections within the 'zine: Animals, Veg Diet & Heath, and Social & Green Issues, and each has several stories. Pippi and Jessi have both contributed articles, as have six other authors, and there is something in here to interest just about everybody. Some of the pieces are funny, some are educational, and some are both entertaining and informative. You may not agree with every article, but one of the things I liked most about the 'zine is that the opinions expressed are clearly individual, and there's no attempt to preach.

A few of my other favorite things about the 'zine were:

- The gorgeous cover art on the front (a painting by Hannah Braden) and back (a sculpture by Green Art Studios).

- Jessi Van Pelt's writing style. She actually made an article about reducing waste fun to read!

- Pippi Howard and Carla Guinta's anecdotes and advice about being vegan in an omnivorous world.

- Erica Freeman's charming article about caring for pet snails.

- Nicole Simone's helpful essay on how you can help animal rescue organizations from home.

- The fact that 10% of the profits from the magazine go to animal charity.

The magazine is printed on recycled paper and bound with a hemp cord, and is also available as a download. I highly recommend it.

The first thing I noticed when I got my copy of the Peace to All Creatures zine was the beautiful cover artwork, which showed in vibrant colors the artists love for birds. Throughout the zine I found other gorgeous art and eye-catching photos. This zine is certainly a feast for the eyes as well as food for thought. The art showed with great visual impact that loving and helping the animals all around us is not just about sacrifice and hard work, it’s also joyful, loving, and rewarding.

I love how this slim volume covered such divergent topics, whatever your interests or current involvement in animal issues you’ll find something in this zine custom-tailored to you. Topics ranged from an amazing recipe for Choco-chunk cookies (and who doesn’t love cookies) to a humorous take on that experience familiar to all rescuers—loving an animal with hygiene, health, or odor issues. I consider myself pretty well-versed in animal issues but even I learned many new things, how artists create masterpieces out of trash and the intricate, peaceful lives of snails just to name a few. You’ll also find instructions on how to do more to help animals and reduce your environmental footprint.

I found the article on using nutrition to prevent skin cancer engrossing since skin cancer runs in my own family. Articles on freegansim and expanding our concepts of equality will challenge the reader to look a little more deeply at our culture and ourselves.

In the end, this zine certainly lives up to its name, as it shows all of us, no matter how busy we are or how much we currently do to help animals, that we really can try to bring peace to all creatures, including our fellow human creatures, and all the non-humans who share the planet with us. Many thanks to all the contributors and to editors Pippi Howard and Jessi VanPelt for bringing us this lovely and thought-provoking publication.
